Team against illegal logging set up to save forests

K

ampar regency in Riau has set up a team to fight against illegal logging practices in a bid to help save existing forested land and protected forests in the region.

"The team is assigned to wipe out any forest-related crimes, especially illegal logging," head of the Kampar forest office Darwin Saragih said on Tuesday as quoted by Antara news agency.

Darwin said that the team had discovered logs believed to be owned by certain crooked groups. "It has confiscated 60 logs near Siabu village in Salo district," he said.

He further explained that the fight against illegal logging was being carried out in coordination with the police and military with the aim of protecting the only remaining forested lands in the regency.

The team was established amid rampant illegal logging practices in the regency, with the police handling four cases last year alone. (hhr)(++++)
