Australian journalist arrested in Cilacap

A

n Australian journalist, Candace Sutton of the Daily Mail, has been detained for allegedly violating immigration law while covering preparations for the executions of death row convicts on the Nusakambangan prison island, Central Java.

"We have held a Daily Mail journalist from Australia for lacking any recommendation letter from the Foreign Ministry [to carry out journalistic activities in Indonesia]," said Cilacap Immigration Office communication and information head Adithia P. Barus, as quoted by Antara news agency on Thursday.

He said the journalist was being interrogated at the immigration office.

When asked about the possible deportation of the journalist, as had happened in the cases of others from Brazil and Peru who were caught covering preparations for the executions of the first batch of death row convicts on Jan. 18, Adithia said it would all depend upon the results of the interrogation that would be presented to the Law and Human Rights Ministry'€™s directorate general for immigration in Jakarta.

Immigration officers were seen busy checking documents of a number of foreign journalists covering execution preparations at the Wijayapura Dock.

Eleven death row convicts are scheduled to be executed on Nusakambangan, despite a global outcry.(+++)
