National scene: Govt shuts down 71 study programs

R

esearch and Technology and Higher Education Minister Muhammad Nasir said that the government had closed 71 study programs in various universities due to a lack of competence.

'€œThe measure needed to be taken to maintain education quality and to prevent fraud [conducted by universities],'€ he said on Sunday at Hassanudin University as quoted by Antara news agency.

The ministry will shut down another 21 programs this year.

He said that by the end of 2014 there were 4,341 universities and colleges in the country offering 21,050 study programs.

Nasir also highlighted the lecturer shortage at institutes of higher learning, citing that the current lecturer-student ratio was 1:400.

The lack of lecturers, he said, had also contributed to the poor quality of higher education.
