he Surabaya branch of the Gerindra Party plans to nominate musician Ahmad Dhani as a candidate to be mayor of Surabaya, claiming that the singer-songwriter was 'intelligent'.
'Youth groups have suggested Ahmad Dhani's name to the party and we appreciate it,' Gerindra Party Surabaya branch chairman BF Sutadi said in Surabaya as quoted by tribunnews.com on Friday. 'He is intelligent.'
Sutadi added that the musician had good leadership qualities.
'He may be a musician, but he can certainly lead if he has the right capabilities,' he insisted.
Sutadi named a number of other celebrities who had become regional leaders, such as actors Rano Karno, who became Banten governor, and Deddy Mizwar, who is West Java vice governor.
Gerindra is also considering other prominent figures from both inside and outside the party for the mayoral elections.
Meanwhile, the National Awakening Party (PKB) plans to nominate model Arzetti Bilbina as its mayoralty candidate.
