resident Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo laid the cornerstone of the Keureuto Dam, the largest of its kind in North Aceh regency, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, on Monday.
The spokesperson of the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry, Djoko Mursito, said the development of the dam was aimed at providing a reservoir with a capacity to accommodate 30.5 million cubic meters of water. It is hoped that the dam prevent floods for the next 50 years.
'The development of Keureuto Dam will use budgetary allocations for the 2015-2019 period amounting to Rp 1.7 trillion (US$130.17 million),' he said as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Monday.
Djoko said the dam would also function to provide irrigation water for 9,420 hectares of land, raw water amounting to 500 liters per second and water-based power to generate a 6.34 Megawatt hydro-powered plant.
It is also hoped that the largest dam in Sumatra becomes an infrastructure project that boosts economic activities in North Aceh and Bener Meriah regencies.
The dam development project in North Aceh began after the signing of an agreement between construction firms PT Brantas Adipraya, Hutama Karya and Wijaya Karya recently.
Brantas Adipraya and its construction partner, PT Pelita Nusa Perkasa, will develop the body and saddle of the dam.
Meanwhile, Wijaya Karya is responsible for the construction of the second package, comprising a deflecting tunnel and waterway. The construction of the spillway is the responsibility of Hutama Karya and its construction partner, PT Perapen. (dyl/ebf)(+++)
