T

he Foreign Ministry has sent a special team to Turkey as part of efforts to find 16 Indonesian tourists who have reportedly been missing in Turkey since Feb. 24.

'€œThe team is to help Turkish security [find the tourists],'€ the ministry'€™s spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir said on Monday, adding that good cooperation with many parties was needed. '€œTurkey is not a small country and there are many mountainous areas. People can easily hide there.'€

The group comprised some 24 travelers, but 16 of them separated from the group.

Arrmanatha refused to speculate that they intended to join the Islamic State (IS) organization, as many feared. "Soon after their arrival in Istanbul, they separated from the tour group and did not visit the tourist sites as scheduled," he said.

He added that most of the missing Indonesians were from Surabaya, East Java, while some were from Surakarta, Central Java.

Meanwhile, the secretary of the national central bureau of Indonesian Interpol Brig. Gen. Setyo Wasisto, said on Monday that the bureau had written to its Turkish counterpart about the case last week, "but we have not yet received any reply," he stated.

Foreign Ministry director for Indonesian national protection and legal aid Lalu Iqbal said none of the families of the 16 missing people had reported to the authorities, according to Antara news agency.(+++)
