he Garut regency administration in West Java is currently investigating illegal logging related to the construction of a 6-kilometer long and 3-meter wide road in the Mount Cipicung area in Sukamulya village.
The location, located on the border between Pakenjeng and Cikelet, is in a forest reserve.
Garut Vice Regent Helmi Budiman said the road construction was taking place in an area managed by the state-run forestry company PT Perhutani. 'But, the road construction is not being carried out by Perhutani. This is about forest conversion,' Helmi said in Bandung on Monday.
Helmi added that the road construction had damaged 600 hectares of forested area without approval from Perhutani or the Garut regency administration. Government and Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel only realized the damage during an inspection of the location at the end of February this year.
According to West Java Environmental Management Center head Anang Sudarna, the local police are currently questioning 15 people, one of whom has been indicated as being the mastermind but who has yet to respond to police summons. Anang added that the person had local influence.
