myGadget: Bayu Amus: For the love of food

-JP/ Tertiani ZB Simanjuntak

Foodie Bayu Amus, 40, has a mission to enlighten the world about Indonesian cuisine.

He started writing his food blog, Epicurina, in English in 2009, after noticing that most sites that came up when he searched for the word '€œrendang'€ were either Malaysian or Singaporean.

'€œI then realized that language was the main obstacle to promoting Indonesian cuisine,'€ he said.

With a day job as a user-experience designer based in Bali, Bayu often traveled, which was convenient for his food-blogging '€” as can be seen in his choice of gadgets.

Samsung Grand Duos smartphone

There are a number of reasons I chose the smartphone as my main telecommunications gadget.

First, it'€™s affordable. Another reason is the phone camera, which takes good-quality photos compared with others of the same class. I need good photo quality to take pictures of food and other things related to my work.

The phone also accommodates two mobile numbers. As I live in Bali, where the signal is sporadic and sometime'€™s there are blank spots, I can just switch to the other service provider to make sure that I'€™m always in touch.

Samsung NX300 camera

It'€™s a smart camera with integrated WiFi service and touch screen.

When taking food pictures, I prefer to have the focus only on the subject and the touchscreen makes the task easier.

Other digital cameras with similar specifications have a viewfinder application, but mirrorless cameras like mine usually don'€™t have applications like that.

Another advantage is that the camera is so light and doesn'€™t bother you, even if you wear it round your neck all the time.

It is also connects to my smartphone, which I can use as a remote control for the camera.

Sony VAIO laptop

I use my laptop mostly for work. The 13-inch screen notebook is so light, less than 700 grams.

The spec fits my job because as a user-experience designer I have to travel to far-flung places, sometimes four destinations in a day, to survey a product'€™s real users.

The notebook makes it possible for me to travel lightly.
