n earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale that hit Banggai, Central Sulawesi, at 6:16 a.m. local time on Monday did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.
The earthquake was felt by residents as far away as Gorontalo, who were shocked by the tremor and rushed to get out of their houses.
'The tremor was felt but it took place only over a short time,' Iman, a local resident, said as quoted by Antara news agency. No reports on damage or casualties were available.
The epicenter of the quake was at 0.52 degrees south and 122.36 degrees east at a depth of 10 kilometers.
It was located on the Minahasa peninsula, or 58 km northeast of Banggai, 132 km southeast of Boalemo, 140 km southwest of Gorontalo and 1,836 km northeast of Jakarta.
