A

n officer of the Batanghari Police in Jambi, identified as Brig. Syahputra, is believed to have left his duty to join the Islamic State (IS) group. Syahputra is reported to have been in Turkey after deserting on March 14, 2015.

He received a passport, with identification number A 9489084.14, from the Jambi immigration office on Feb. 17, 2014. In his proposal to make the passport, he said he would go to Malaysia for a tour.

Jambi Police chief Brig. Gen. Bambang Sudarisman confirmed one of his subordinates had deserted to join the radical group.

Bambang said that Syahputra had expressed his intention to quit his job since last January. "On March 5, 2015, Syaputra went to Medan to meet his mother. However, until today he has not been back to his office," Bambang said.

The police are still investigating the whereabouts of Syahputra. "We have coordinated with related sectors to search for his whereabouts," Bambang said, explaining that his last job was maintaining security at state Bank BRI's branch office at Muara Bulia from Feb. 2 to 28, 2015.

Meanwhile, the police have also detained a vocational school student in Jambi for potential links with IS.

The student was identified as MJN, 18, a resident of Sijenjang subdistrict, East Jambi district. "He is being intensively interrogated at the Jambi Police headquarters," Bambang said. (hhr)
