he Atambua District Court in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on Monday sentenced Irpan to life in prison for trafficking 2.2 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine (locally known as sabu-sabu) from Timor Leste. The verdict was similar to the sentence that had been sought by prosecutors.
The trial was presided over by judge Soesilo, and was accompanied by Theodora Usfunan, Bukti Firmansyah and public prosecutor Muhammad Rizal.
Defendant Irpan, from Medan, North Sumatra, was accompanied by his legal advisor, Martinus Sobe.
In the verdict, presiding judge Soesilo said the defendant was found guilty of smuggling drugs in violation of Law No. 35/2009 on narcotics.
'The defendant was found guilty of committing the crime by smuggling 2.2 kg of crystal meth from Timor Leste. He is sentenced to life imprisonment,' said Soesilo, as he hit the gavel.
Through his lawyer, Martinus, the defendant said he was still mulling the filing of an appeal.
