he head of the Jakarta Legal Aid Foundation's (LBH Jakarta) case handling division, Muhamad Isnur, said the discussion over the candidacy for National Police chief at the House of Representatives (DPR) was unduly drawn out because of accumulated mistakes made by President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo.
'The first mistake occurred when Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan was proposed as the sole candidate to be chief of the National Police, although he got a 'red mark' from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK),' he said as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Thursday.
Isnur said President Jokowi seemed to have been in a hurry to propose Budi as a candidate for the police chief post to the House.
Started with the controversial nomination, mistakes committed by Jokowi continued to grow and his political opponents at the House had eventually used them to attack the President, he further said.
'President Jokowi received a lot of input from national leaders such as Buya [Ahmad] Syafii Maarif and other figures who were independent and have no interests. He should have implemented their input,' Isnur said.
On the other hand, he said, House members had shown that they tended to put forward the political interests of their groups instead of the interests of the people.
Isnur said such partisan tendencies could be seen from the way the House members responded to the nomination of Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti to replace Budi and their slowness in deliberating the government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) on the KPK.
'I also see an accumulation of disappointments among the parties united in the Red-and-White Coalition over President Jokowi's administration's decision to recognize the Golkar Party's splinter faction led by Agung Laksono as the one that is legitimate,' he said.
Therefore, Isnur said, President Jokowi should play a greater role as the supporter of the interests of the people, the nation and all groups in Indonesia.
'If Jokowi can position himself as the father of all Indonesian people, we will see solutions for all of these problems,' said Isnur. (ebf)(++++)
