outh Jakarta Police and Setiabudi Police have recently raided a factory that was producing ice blocks allegedly containing E. coli bacteria and distributing them to Greater Jakarta.
Jakarta Police head Sr. Comr. Wahyu Hadiningrat said Thursday that the case was revealed when a policeman who got suspicious of the ice brought a sample to the Health Ministry's laboratory for examination.
'The lab results showed the sample contained E. coli bacteria that can cause a number of diseases,' Wahyu told reporters at the South Jakarta Police headquarters.
Wahyu said the police traced it to the factory and found that the ice was made of water taken from the Kalimalang River in Bekasi, West Java. The factory staff put the water in storage and added dangerous chemical ingredients such as chlorine and caustic soda. Wahyu said the ice was then distributed to small vendors and industrial factories in the city.
'We have arrested two people from the factories in this case, but we have yet to name them as suspects,' Wahyu continued.
