OGYAKARTA: Yogyakarta High Prosecutor'€™s Office head I Gede Sudiatmaja says his office is preparing to transfer Filipino death row inmate Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso from Wirogunan Penitentiary in Yogyakarta to Nusakambangan prison island in Cilacap, Central Java, after her plea for clemency was rejected by the Supreme Court.

'€œToday, I wrote a letter to the Yogyakarta Police on coordinating the transfer of Veloso to Nusakambangan,'€ Sudiatmaja told journalists at his office on Friday.

The Supreme Court announced on Wednesday its rejection of Veloso'€™s case review. In early March, she filed a case review amid new evidence that showed that Nur Aini, her interpreter was regarded to have been incompetent during Veloso'€™s trial at Sleman District Court in 2010. Nur Aini could not speak Tagalog and Veloso could not understand English well.

Veloso filed the case review at the Supreme Court after her plea for clemency was rejected by President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo.

She was arrested at Adisucipto Airport in Yogyakarta in possession of 2.6 kilograms of heroin that she smuggled from Kuala Lumpur on April 25, 2010. The Sleman District Court sentenced Veloso, a domestic maid, to death.
