even people were found dead after at least 12 people were buried during a landslide in Kampung Cimerak, Tegalpanjang village, Cireunghas district, Sukabumi regency, West Java, on Saturday evening.

Two victims were found alive during a search operation conducted by a joint team comprised of police and military personnel, Sukabumi-chapter Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) officers, youth-led disaster preparedness group members and other volunteers reaching more than 150 people.

'€œWe found the ninth victim shortly before 3 p.m. local time Sunday. We will continue the search operation tomorrow if it cannot be completed later today,'€ the BPBD'€™s head of disaster preparedness and prevention, Irwan Fajar, told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.

He said the team had focused its search operations on two points suspected to be the locations of the victims'€™ houses. At least 10 houses were buried when soil on steep slopes up to 45 degrees collapsed.

'€œThe landslide was triggered by rainfall that was quite heavy yesterday. The location is also prone to landslides,'€ said Irwan.

It had been quite difficult for the personnel to carry out the search operation as the soil had still been unstable, he added.

As of Sunday afternoon, the joint team has evacuated 293 people from 97 families. They were rescued from landslide-prone areas and were taken to an evacuation post in Tegalpanjang village, which is located around one kilometer from the area of the incident.

Irwan said all districts in Sukabumi were prone to landslides due to high intensity of rainfall and unstable soil in the regency.(ebf)(+++)
