ice President Jusuf Kalla has asked the Communications and Information Ministry to not recklessly block websites before actually checking if they are really harboring any radical views, despite requests by the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT).
Nineteen websites posting Islamic contents were blocked at the request of the BNPT because of concerns that they promote radicalism.
'I want them to check the content [of the sites], whether or not the reports [of radical sentiments] are true or not. Don't just block sites like that,' Kalla said on Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com.
Kalla said that he has spoken directly with Communications and Information Minister Rudiantara regarding the issue and says that the ministry will review and recheck all the blocked sites' contents.
He added that the ministry should mainly ban sites that constantly post radical views and not ones with posts that are mostly open to interpretation. If a site was found to have consistently promoted radical beliefs then the ministry must be firm in blocking it.
Meanwhile, Rudiantara confirmed that there were a number of sites that had been blocked by the ministry that were believed to have been actively spreading radical views. The blockages were made at the request of the BNPT.
The blocked Islamic websites are:
1. Arrahmah.com
2. Voa-islam.com
3. Ghur4ba.blogspot.com
4. Panjimas.com
5. Thoriquna.com
6. Dakwatuna.com
7. Kalifahmujahid.com
8. An-najah.net
9. Muslimdaily.net
10. Hidayatullah.com
11. Salam-online.com
12. Aqlislamiccenter.com
13. Kiblat.net
14. Dakwahmedia.com
15. Muqawamah.com
16. Lasdipo.com
17. Gemaislam.com
18. Eramuslim.com
19. Daulahislam.com
Even before this incident of blocking Islamic sites, the ministry had already become notorious among Indonesian Internet users for blocking sites that it deemed to have 'questionable' content, mainly pornographic sites and sites thought to have hosted pornographic content. (dyl/nvn)(++++)
