ozens of people calling themselves the Anti-Racist Residents (MARS) group staged a protest in front of City Hall on Monday, demanding that Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama publicly apologize for naming a cow 'USB,' which Ahok said stood for 'Untuk Sapi Betawi' or 'For Betawi Cow'.
MARS said that naming a cow 'Betawi' insulted the Betawi ethnic group.
Ahok named the cow during his visit on Friday to PT Karya Anugrah Rumpin, a cattle breeder. The owner of the company asked Ahok to name his calves. After a few moments, Ahok said 'USB', which caused laughter among the guests.
Recently, in a slip of the tongue, councilor Abraham Lunggana, better known as Haji Lulung, referred to the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) as USB (universal serial bus).
'We want Ahok to apologize in public to the Betawi people, as his comment is racist,' Daud said.
Ahok commented on the protest to the press and said there was no need to apologize, just like people did not need to apologize when they referred to Balinese cows or Madura cows.
'The Balinese and Madurese are proud of cows named after their regions, so why shouldn't we?' he said.
