Documentary filmmaker Budi Kurniawan has many reasons to celebrate the National Film Day on March 30. For one, he didn'€™t expect that his documentary on coffee culture in Indonesia would win an award at the inaugural Ahvaz Film Festival in Iran earlier this month.

Budi'€™s film, titled Biji Kopi Indonesia (Indonesian Coffee Beans, or Aroma of Heaven for international release) won the Best Editing Award at the science-themed film festival.

'€œI was invited because the documentary is up for screening, he said. '€œI didn'€™t know it had been included in the competition.'€

Next week, Budi start a month-long road show in the US, with stops slated for cities Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, New York and Washington to present Biji Kopi Indonesia to American coffee lovers, university students and diplomats.

'€œWhile I'€™m there, I'€™m planning to do a literature search for my next documentary, Legend of Java. The word '€˜java'€™ has been used for centuries in America to describe a cup of coffee,'€ Budi said. '€œI want Legend to be a sort of soft diplomacy - a story about the cultural identity of both Indonesians and Americans.'€

Budi has his own personal philosophy of communication. For the 34-year-old, information technology and connectivity tools are there to make work easier.

'€œI cannot be bothered by carrying many telecommunications gadgets at one go and getting busy with them,'€ he said. '€œI wonder now how many people are still writing down letters on a piece of paper and dropping it at the post office.'€

Budy, who graduated in communications from tDiponegoro University in Semarang, Central Java, also studied Sufism, a more mystical version of Islam, in Turkey on a scholarship. '€œWe often forget the reason why we need the technology in the first place.'€

Here are three gadgets or tools that Budi recommends.

Apple iPhone

This smartphone has become my main working tool. I'€™m currently working on The Legend of Java. I take photos with my smartphone to gather ideas with my team. It'€™s another benefit of the gadget - I don'€™t need a camera.

Apple Macbook

I chose [a computer] with the same operation system as my smartphone just for the reason of convenience. I don'€™t play games and I think I have been left far behind on the use of social media platforms.

App

I use Evernote to integrate my workspace on my phone and laptop. However, I still bring a notebook and scribble down my ideas.
