The General Elections Commission (KPU) says 68 regions have not allocated budgets for regional elections in December
he General Elections Commission (KPU) says 68 regions have not allocated budgets for regional elections in December.
KPU chairman Husni Kamil Manik said the heads of the regions would see their tenures end in the first half of 2016, so they had not allocated budgets for elections this year.
'It is [the government's] duty to push the 68 regions to create budget space this year,' he said on Tuesday at the House of Representatives.
The KPU is scheduled to organize 273 concurrent regional elections in December. Candidates should register as early as June. Some regions will hold elections early while others will delay due to the new simultaneous elections system.
Husni said he hoped the Home Ministry could push the regions to create the fiscal space required.
'We do not want to intervene in budget allocation because it's the Home Ministry's authority,' he said.
