Dozens of animal rights activists united with the Animal Friend Jogja (AFJ), Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN), Jogja Domestic Cat Lovers (JDCL) and other NGOs on Saturday staged a rally to urge the government to stop the dog meat trade in Indonesia.
The Yogyakarta rally took place on Saturday simultaneously with similar rallies internationally for "Global Day of Action: International March to End Dog & Cat Meat Trade".
'We have sent a report of our investigation results on the dog meat trade, including videos, to President Joko ['Jokowi'] Widodo with a hope that he will stop such trade in Indonesia,' said Angelina Pane of AFJ in a speech in the zero point area of Yogyakarta on Saturday.
In the rally, animal rights advocates hung a large banner emblazoned with a message reading 'Dogs are not food, Jogja rejects Sengsu'.
Sengsu is an acronym for tongseng asu, a popular dish that includes dog meat. Activists also brought posters displaying pictures of dogs taken from owners to be killed and eaten.
'We urge people not to consume dog meat, as it violates the 2009 Animal Husbandry Law. Information saying that dog meat can increase vitality is a myth,' said Angelina.
She went on to say that the World Health Organization (WHO) had stated that the dog meat trade was partly responsible for the prevalence of rabies in the country..
Without stopping the dog-meat trade, Indonesia was not likely to realize its goal to become rabies-free by 2020, she added.
Angelina said that according to her institution's investigation, dog meat in rabies-free regions like Yogyakarta were sourced from areas where the disease could still be found, like Bali and West Java.
After a string of anti dog-meat trade campaigns, Angelina said several food vendors had stopped selling dog meat dishes. The Yogyakarta administration had also welcomed the AFJ's participation in the organizing of a gubernatorial decree on the dog meat trade. (ebf)
