Pets, not food: Participants of a rally organized by Animal Defender Indonesia hold placards that read, âSay no to dog and cat meatâ, at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta on Sunday
Animal Defenders Indonesia held a rally on Sunday during Car Free Day to campaign against dog and cat meat consumption.
Hundreds of cat and dog lovers took part in the rally at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta. They brought banners and brochures while shouting slogans;some brought their pet dogs to the rally.
Event coordinator Doni Herdaru said that cats and dogs were friends of humans and that they should not be consumed. The group also said that dogs carried diseases such as cholera and rabies.
The animal welfare group said in a press release that the government had yet to issue a regulation that would allow the breeding of cats and dogs ,particularly for human consumption, despite the health concerns surrounding the processing of the meats. The animals were also said to have been tortured, an act that violates Law No. 18/2009 on animal husbandry and health.
In Indonesia, dog meat consumption is common for several ethnic groups.
