ormer energy and mineral resources minister Jero Wacik, who has been named a graft suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), filed a pretrial petition with the South Jakarta District Court on Tuesday.
'He is fighting for his rights within the legal mechanism,' said Jero Wacik's lawyer, Sugiyono, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Sugiyono said the pretrial petition was filed on March 30.
Spokesman for the South Jakarta District Court I Made Sutrisna confirmed the report and said the hearing was slated to be held on April 13.
'It will be led by Judge Sihar H. Purba,' he said in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Previously, KPK spokesman Priharsa Nugraha said the antigraft body had summoned Jero for questioning on Monday as a graft suspect for allegedly abusing his power and committing corruption that caused state losses of some Rp 7 billion while he was serving as former culture and tourism minister from 2008 to 2011. Jero, however, failed to show up.
Jero sent a letter explaining the reason for his absence on Monday, stating he would wait for the result of the pretrial hearing.
In October last year, the KPK named Jero a suspect for allegedly collecting Rp 10 billion while serving as energy and mineral resources minister between 2011 and 2013.
In recent weeks, pretrial petitions have also has been submitted by former religious affairs minister Suryadharma Ali and Sutan Bhatoegana, the former chairman of the House of Representatives Commission VII overseeing energy and environment. (fsu)(++++)
