C

hairman of the House of Representatives Commission VII overseeing energy and environment, Mulyadi, has reported Mustofa Assegaf, a United Development Party (PPP) lawmaker at the House, to Jakarta Police on Thursday for beating him during a hearing with Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said on Wednesday.

'€œI have undergone a forensic test and reported the incident with the faction leadership. I will report it with the House'€™s Honorary Council, to be processed in accordance with the House'€™s codes of ethics. It is a crime. The PPP leadership has also issued an apology,'€ Mulyadi said on Thursday.

He said the incident occurred after he reprimanded Mustofa for speaking too long during the hearing. Mustofa spoke for 15 minutes, while according to a House internal ruling sets a maximum speaking limit of three minutes.

'€œI have always reprimanded Mustofa for speaking too long in order to give other members a chance to ask the minister questions,'€ he said as quoted by tribunnews.com.

After the warning, the two men began to argue, and Mulyadi reminded Mustofa that he was the one presiding over the hearing, and that he was in charge.

'€œWhen I went to the restroom, I met Mustofa there and we argued again. I told him to stop speaking so long. And then he beat me,'€ Mulyadi said. (rms)
