Indonesia unhappy over lack of Saudi execution warning

T

he Indonesian government has registered a protest with the Saudi government for not being notified ahead of the recent execution of an Indonesian citizen in Saudi Arabia.

"We have sent a letter to the Saudi government to ask why it did not give any warning of the execution," Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said on Tuesday night as quoted by Antara news agency.

She complained that the Indonesian government and people had only been made aware of the execution post-factum.

"We did not receive any information about the execution," she claimed.

The Saudi government executed Siti Zaenab binti Duhri Rupa from Bangkalan, Madura, East Java, at 10 a.m. local time on Tuesday.

On behalf of the Indonesian government, the minister expressed her condolences to the bereaved family and stated her hope that the deceased was by the side of God.

She went on that the Indonesian government remained resolved to doing what it could to protect its citizens abroad.

"No one should question our stance and policy with regard to protecting our citizens," she added.

Retno said she had already reported the matter to President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo.

"We had taken all efforts including through diplomatic channels, legal avenues and approaching the family of the victim, as well as sending a presidential letter and during my meeting with the Saudi deputy foreign minister in March,'€ she noted, when asked what actions the government had taken with regard to Siti'€™s case.

She revealed that maximum efforts had been taken including offering compensation money, explaining that under the Saudi Islamic legal system, the prerogative to pardon rested solely with the victim'€™s family.

The government had offered to hep Siti'€™s grieving family, she said, including by facilitating them to go to Saudi Arabia.

"Tonight, a team from the Foreign Ministry will go to Bangkalan to meet the bereaved family," she noted. (hhr)(++++)
