ship carrying 35 passengers sank in the Mahakam River in Segihan village, Kutai Kartanegara regency, East Kalimantan, on Tuesday, leaving one passenger dead.

Kutai Kartanegara Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) head Darmansyah confirmed the accident. '€œThirty-four passengers were evacuated but one passenger, identified as Lina, remains missing,'€ he said on Tuesday as quoted by Antara news agency.

A search and rescue team from the Kutai Kartanegara and East Kalimantan BPBD, accompanied by the police and local volunteers, searched for the missing passenger, finding her body at 10 a.m.

'€œWe took her body to Jantur village, Muara Muntai district. The ship'€™s captain Zainuri and ship owner Jaini are still being questioned by the police,'€ Darmansyah said.

The ill-fated ship, the DC 02, sank near Segihan village as it ferried passengers to Jantur from Samarinda, East Kalimantan. The passengers said they suspected that the cause of the accident was a broken pump.
