M

exican prosecutors have taken into custody a U.S. woman and a Mexican man who were allegedly caught driving a sport utility vehicle with 25 gallons (94 liters) of liquid methamphetamine hidden in the gas tank.

The Attorney General's Office said Tuesday that the couple was detained on a highway in the northern border state of Sonora following a tip to police. The office said they have been taken to prisons pending drug trafficking charges.

The office says the couple departed Culiacan, Sinaloa, and was driving to Los Angeles.

It did not identify either of the two suspects.

Smugglers have attempted to bring liquid methamphetamine into the United States in tequila bottles and windshield-washer containers. (***)
