igrant Care, an NGO advocating for the rights of Indonesian workers abroad, is urging President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo to take immediate action to rescue Indonesian migrant workers on death row abroad. The call followed reports that the Saudi Arabian authorities executed another Indonesian migrant worker, Karni binti Medi Tarsim,on Thursday.
'This is painful and really hurts us, the Indonesian people. The Saudi Arabian government is really brutal for having executed two Indonesian migrant workers one after the other,' Migrant Care executive director Anis Hidayah said in a press release on Thursday.
Karni was reportedly beheaded on Thursday morning local time in Saudi Arabia. In 2013, a Saudi Arabian court sentenced Karni to death for allegedly murdering her employer's four-year-old child in 2012.
Karni's execution came just two days after an Indonesian migrant worker, Siti Zaenab binti Duhri Rupa, was executed. In 1999, a Saudi Arabian court sentenced her to death for allegedly killing her female employer, Nourah binti Abdullah Duhem al-Maruba.
Migrant Care urged Jokowi to stop executions against Indonesian migrant workers by taking direct actions both as head of state and head of government.
'We can no longer tolerate Saudi Arabia's brutal attitude,' said Anis.
According to NGO data, 290 migrant workers working in five countries, namely China, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Qatar, currently face charges that carry the threat of capital punishment. A final verdict has been reached in 59 of those cases.
Earlier, Migrant Care urged the Indonesian government to declare the Saudi Arabian ambassador to Indonesia persona non grata for the country's failure to notify Indonesian authorities before the execution of Siti Zaenab. (dyl/ebf)(++++)
