AKARTA: The Jakarta administration is set to purchase a plot of land owned by the British Embassy on Jl. MH Thamrin in Central Jakarta. The UK has moved their embassy office from Jl. MH Thamrin to Patra Kuningan in South Jakarta.
Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama said that the city administration has had discussions with officials from the British Embassy and would buy the land for about Rp 500 billion (US$39 million).
'We have been in talks with the British Embassy. We will buy the land for about Rp 500 billion, if I'm not mistaken. We'll develop an MRT [mass rapid transit] control room and a green area on that land,' Ahok told reporters at City Hall on Friday.
'The British Embassy has now moved into a new building [...] We are discussing a specific expression of interest in our other embassy site. Our priority is to ensure a good value for the British taxpayer,' the embassy said in an official statement provided via email to The Jakarta Post.
