ANYUMAS: The number of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Banyumas regency, Central Java, has sharply increased throughout the years, with an average increase of over 100 percent in new HIV/AIDS patients last year.
'The number of PLWHA increases every year, so Banyumas is on HIV/AIDS alert,' Widyaningrum, an AIDS activist in Banyumas, said on Friday.
She said that based on data gathered from various relevant agencies, the number of people with AIDS in Banyumas was more than 1,330 in 2014, or a sharp increase compared to around 350 people in 2013.
'This is extraordinary and cannot be ignored,' said Widyaningrum.
According to her, 60 percent accounted for sex workers, 30 percent housewives and the rest drug addicts.
'Most of the infected housewives contracted the disease from their husbands who are sexually promiscuous,' said Widyaningrum.
Most of the sex workers who have AIDS reportedly operate in the Gang Sadar red-light district in the Baturaden tourism area.
