Luna Maya becomes the face of Black Widow

JP/DON

Model and presenter Luna Maya may be seen wearing black latex, a multi-purpose belt and army boots more in the coming weeks.

Her new look is part of a new role as the official Black Widow celebrity ambassador from Walt Disney and Marvel Studios.

Luna said she felt ecstatic to have been chosen to represent one of the iconic superhero characters.

'€œI have always admired superheroes since I was a child. To be chosen as an ambassador for Black Widow, a very strong female super heroine character from Marvel, is more than a dream come true,'€ she said.

Her tasks as Black Widow ambassador are simple and fun. They include making videos about Black Widow and The Avengers, taking photo shoots, showing up at events like costume parties, buzzing about the movie on her social media accounts and, of course, attending the movie premiere here on April 21.

For the new role, Luna took some time to learn about Black Widow'€™s history to get into character. '€œI have been reading a lot about Black Widow, about her history from Marvel comics and films,'€ she said.

She found the Black Widow character perfectly represented her, so she had no problem getting into character.

'€œBlack Widow is one tough lady who has had a lot of hardships throughout her life. She suffers from many tragedies but manages to survive '€” becoming a strong person who is not only willing to defend others, but also to empower them,'€ she says.

'€œThe Black Widow character truly represents me as a person. Her super ability in martial arts and her adaptability to any hardship and conditions are the superpowers I would love to have if I could be a super heroine.'€

The Black Widow character first appeared in a publishing by Mystic back in the 1940s. The first Black Widow character'€™s alter ego was named Claire Voyant.

Mystic Comics then became Marvel Comics and the Black Widow character also evolved with a reintroduction of Natasha Romanoff as the character'€™s new alter ego in 1964.

In Indonesia, Black Widow gained popularity following her appearance in the 2012 Hollywood blockbuster, The Avengers. In the film, Black Widow was played by Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson, who is set to return in the movie sequel, Avengers: Age Of Ultron.

Like Black Widow, Luna'€™s life story has had its ups and downs.

Born in Denpasar on Aug. 26, 1983, as the only girl of three siblings, Luna fought against bullies during her childhood days such that if her head was fully shaven, scars from her childhood days would be visible.

At the peak of her career, back in 2010, she was hit by a scandal, in which a leaked video allegedly showing her having sex with then boyfriend and singer Nazril '€œAriel'€ Irham circulated on the Internet.

It was a difficult time for Luna. She was mocked and lost the things she had worked so hard to achieve.

She may have hit rock-bottom, but once again, she showed her resilience and strong character. Now, five years later, she'€™s trusted by Disney and Marvel as Black Widow.

'€œBeing appointed as ambassador for Black Widow is another important milestone for my 15-year career as a public figure. I believe this will have a positive effect on my future and open more doors for me,'€ Luna said.

'€œPerhaps, with this role, I might get a chance to play in a blockbuster superhero action movie as one of its main characters. You never know. You have to dream big.'€
