Islands in focus: 279 RI workers face death penalty abroad

s many as 279 Indonesian migrant workers are facing the death penalty abroad, an official with the Manpower Ministry said.

Speaking in Semarang, Central Java, on Friday, the ministry'€™s overseas employment director, Guntur Witjaksono, said informal lobbying would be key to sparing the migrant workers from execution.

Of the 279 workers, 36 are on death row in Saudi Arabia. Of the 36, six are from Central Java.

Head of the overseas and domestic employment section of Central Java Manpower, Transmigration and Population Agency, Ahmad Aziz, said as of early 2015, there were eight workers from the province on death row abroad.
