Military, police deployed to fight illegal logging in Papua

T

he Jayapura municipal administration has deployed the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the police to support the forest operation in its fight against rampant illegal logging in the past few years.

'€œBesides mobilizing security agency [Satpol PP] personnel and the forest police, we have also deployed soldiers from the Cenderawasig Military District and the police to stop the rampant illegal logging,'€ Jayapura Mayor Benhur Tommy Mano said in Jayapura on Tuesday.

The soldiers and police were deployed because Satpol PP and the forest police have frequently received attack threats from illegal loggers.

'€œIllegal loggers use machetes and arrows in their attacks on Satpol PP personnel and forest police. So I have to deploy a strong force in facing the illegal loggers,'€ he said as quoted by Antara news agency.

He regretted that a number of forest areas in the municipality had turned barren and been converted into farming areas, a serious threat that could undermine the area'€™s ecosystem. He also said the municipality had hundreds of forest police but they did not work professionally. (rms)(++++)
