aritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti has asked the Jakarta administration to delay a reclamation project dubbed National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD).
The NCICD project, initiated in 1995 under Presidential Regulation No. 52/1995 on Jakarta North Coast reclamation, is divided into three phases and includes building a sea wall as well as the development of 17 artificial islets off the coast of the city.
"Reclamation means that you are reclaiming water to 'make' land. If you make land over water, you are claiming the space of up to 1 ton of water. This means that there needs to be a place on the land of Jakarta to accommodate that 1 ton of water," Susi said during a seminar at City Hall in Central Jakarta on Tuesday.
Without the reservoir, Susi went on, inundation in Jakarta would worsen. She urged the city administration to develop a reservoir before continuing the reclamation project. (++++)
