National scene: Alex Noerdin meets KPK summons

S

outh Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin showed up on Monday for questioning by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in relation to his status as a witness in a graft case centering on the construction of the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games athletes village in Jakabaring, South Sumatra.

He previously defied the summons twice, on March 24 and on April 16, providing excuses such as a hectic working schedule.

'€œI hope this case can be resolved soon, so it will be clear; who'€™s right or wrong; facts and lies,'€ he said after the questioning.

Alex was asked to confront the testimony of former Democratic Party treasurer Muhammad Nazaruddin, who claimed that Alex had received billions of rupiah for the project in 2011.

He previously rejected the accusations in October 2014. The KPK has also named South Sumatra Public Works Agency head Rizal Abdullah a suspect in the case.

Rizal was suspected to have marked up the construction project'€™s budget, believed to have caused Rp 25 billion in state losses.

The antigraft body is now investigating the involvement of Alex in the case.

The construction project also resulted in the convictions of Nazaruddin, House of Representatives lawmaker Angelina Sondakh and former Youth and Sports Ministry secretary Wafid Muharram, among others.
