he Central Java Police chief and the Central Java Prosecutor's Office head have arrived on Nusakambangan prison island in Cental Java along with 10 hearses and more than 100 Mobile Brigade (Brimob) personnel as the executions of nine death row inmates are scheduled to be conducted within hours.
While officials have yet to announce the exact time of the executions, several low-ranking officials said they would be conducted in the early hours of Wednesday.
"I cannot tell you the exact schedule. The police are only tasked with preparing and executing the inmates. The order comes from the Attorney General's Office (AGO)," said Central Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Nur Ali.
Suhendro Putro from the Java Christian Church in Cilacap, Central Java, said that the executions were likely to occur on Wednesday as he had been instructed to write the names of several non-Muslim inmates and their date of death on crosses that would be placed on their coffins.
All the crosses have April 29 as the date of death written on them.
"Many people came yesterday (Monday) to take pictures of the crosses. Many protested my work, but I'm just doing my job," said Suhendro.
The inmates scheduled for execution are Indonesian Zainal Abidin, Australians Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, Brazilian Rodrigo Gularte, Nigerians Sylvester Obiekwe Nwolise, Raheem Agbaje Salami and Okwudili Oyatanze, Ghanaian Martin Anderson and Filipino Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso. (ren)(+++)
