amily members of Australian death row inmates Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran visited their loved ones on the Nusakambangan prison island in Cilacap, Central Java, on Tuesday, as their executions draw near.
Accompanied by Australian Consul General Majel Hind and Julian McMahon, a lawyer from Australia, the families of the ringleaders of the so-called Bali Nine drug ring arrived at the Wijaya Pura Dock, the crossing terminal to the prison island, at 8:25 a.m. local time, Antara reported.
Unlike previous visits, security officers did not allow vehicles carrying the Bali Nine duo's families to enter the Wijaya Pura Dock area.
One of Sukumaran's siblings cried hysterically. Several meters after the Sukumaran family, Chan's brother walked with his head bent over the street, showing his deep sadness. Chan's wife, Febiyanti Herewila, and his mother were present in the visit.
Also on Tuesday, a number of Central Java Police and Prosecutors' Office officials were reported to have visited the prison island to monitor preparations for the executions expected to take place either on Tuesday evening or early Wednesday.
Andrew and Myuran are among nine death row inmates to be executed. The others are three Nigerians, namely Raheem Agbaje Salami, Silvester Obiekwe Nwaolise alias Mustofa, and Okwudili Oyatanze; Zainal Abidin (Indonesia), Rodrigo Gularte (Brazil), Martin Anderson alias Belo (Ghana), and Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso (the Philippines).
