he lawyer of death row drug convict Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso has asked the government to postpone Veloso'€™s execution after a woman who allegedly recruited her to act as a drug courier gave himself up to police in the Philippines on Tuesday.

'€œThe execution should be postponed so her case can be resolved. The Philippine government needs Mary Jane'€™s testimony in the case,'€ said lawyer Agus Salim over the phone on Tuesday as quoted by tempo.co.

Maria Kristina Sergio, the alleged recruiter of Veloso, voluntarily turned herself in to police on Tuesday.

Veloso is among death row inmates slated to be executed late on Tuesday for drug trafficking charges. She was arrested with 2.6 kg of heroin at Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta in 2010.

Agus claimed that if the execution were gone ahead with, the Philippines and Indonesia would lose out, as the drug and human trafficking networks that involved Veloso in the first place would remain hidden.

Agus said he had informed the Attorney General'€™s Office of the new development in the case, but admitted that the law enforcement agency had maintained that Veloso would nonetheless be shot as planned. (fsu/nvn)
