RI agrees to fly bodies of Australian convicts home

T

he Attorney General's Office (AGO) said on Tuesday that the government had agreed to the final requests fielded by two Australian death-row convicts for their bodies to be flown to Australia for burial.

AGO spokesman Tony Spontana said that Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran had requested that their bodies be buried in Australia.

"The Australian government has sent a letter to the Foreign Ministry requesting for the bodies of Chan and Sukumaran to be put in a funeral home in West Jakarta before being flown to Australia the following day," said Tony.

"We will accommodate the demand. It will not be a problem," he said.

Tony explained that the AGO had also granted Chan's request for a wedding ceremony with his girlfriend, Febiyanti Herewila, before his death. The ceremony was held on Monday on the Nusakambangan prison island in Cilacap, Central Java, where Chan and eight others are in isolation cells. (ren)(+++)
