RI to review weaponry system grants, says minister

D

efense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu has said the government will review its policy on receiving primary weaponry defense system (Alutsista) grants from other countries.

'€œWe will review again the policy [of receiving weaponry system grants]. It'€™s true that the jet fighters they gave to us were used aircraft, but their conditions were better than ours. Nevertheless, we will reconsider it,'€ said Ryamizard as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Tuesday.

For the time being, the former Army chief of staff said the Indonesian government would still agree to receive any weaponry defense system granted by other countries.

Commenting on an F-16 jet fighter that recently caught fire at the Halim Perdanakusuma airport, East Jakarta, Ryamizard said the government was still investigating the incident.

'€œOur investigation into the causes of the incident is still ongoing,'€ he said.

The Indonesian government has obtained 24 F-16 jet fighters from the US government. Indonesia still had to pay US$800 million to bring the aircraft to the country and for their upgrade costs. (ebf)(+++)
