ight convicts executed on Wednesday morning were confirmed dead 27 minutes after the executions commenced, according to the Attorney General's Office (AGO).

"The executions of eight convicts started at 12:35 a.m. this morning [Wednesday]," AGO spokesman Tony Spontana told reporters on Wednesday.

He explained that after the executions had been completed, doctors at the location checked the inmates to confirm their deaths.

"They were all confirmed dead by the doctors at 1:02 a.m.," Tony said.

Funeral processions for the eight convicts were conducted in various parts of the country before they were transferred to their final resting places, some inside the country and others abroad, as per their requests.

Despite an international outcry, the government executed eight death row inmates early on Wednesday on Nusakambangan prison island near Cilacap in Central Java.

The eight were Indonesian Zainal Abidin, Australians Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, Brazilian Rodrigo Gularte, Nigerians Sylvester Obiekwe Nwolise, Raheem Agbaje Salami and Okwudili Oyatanze and Ghanaian Martin Anderson. (ebf)(+++)
