lectronics giant PT Samsung Electronics Indonesia (SEIN) unveiled on Wednesday its latest flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge , which boast high-end specifications for the premium market.
Samsung, which currently claims to lead the Indonesian smartphone industry with a 41.5 percent market share, displays noticeable innovation in the new products, with a curved wraparound screen on the S6 Edge, as well as the latest 14 nm Exynos 7420 high-speed processor.
'People ask why Samsung changes its products so fast. It's because we are always being chased by others. Anything we make, others copy,' SEIN vice president of IT and mobile business, Andre Rompis, told the press at Raffles Hotel in South Jakarta on Wednesday.
The new devices also include a 16 megapixel rear camera equipped with auto-real time High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Tracking Auto Focus that enables users to focus on the movement of an object. The battery is equipped with fast charging, with 10 minutes of charging enough for four hours of use.
Powered by the Android 5.0 Lollypop operating system, the curved screen is the major difference between S6 Edge, which is priced at Rp 12.49 million (US$968.88), and the S6, with a price tag of Rp 9.49 million. Another subtle difference is that the S6 Edge has a larger battery capacity at 2,600 mAh, 50 mAh higher than the S6.
However, the company has removed the memory card slot on the new devices, replacing it with OneDrive cloud storage in partnership with Microsoft.
'We want to educate people that by storing data on the cloud, they don't have to be afraid of losing their data if they lose their phone,' said the company's IT and mobile marketing director Vebbyna Kaunang.
The high price for the new flagship phones is intended to target the premium market.
'The premium market is small, 3 to 4 percent of the total, but the value is 12 to 15 percent. We have a value proposition to the consumer according to the performance,' Andre concluded.
The phones will be available in stores from May 8.
Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. stated on Wednesday that it expected earnings to rise in the second quarter after posting its highest profit in three quarters in January to March on strong demand for the new Galaxy S6 devices. (fsu/nvn)
