he government's decision to suspend Filipina Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso's execution shows that something is wrong with Indonesia's judiciary system, says an analyst.
Erasmus Napitupulu, a researcher from the Institute for Criminal Justice Reform, said that with the execution's suspension, new evidence that might save the convict from the firing squad could be announced to the public and brought to court.
'The execution's suspension shows something is wrong with our judiciary system,' kompas.com quoted him as saying here on Wednesday.
According to him, in the Veloso case, she played her role as courier and did not know the contents of the bag she had brought from Kuala Lumpur to Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta.
All death row inmates were allowed to file second reviews of their cases to the Supreme Court, a move that was against the court's regulations that stated that requests to reopen and review cases was done only once.
'Our judiciary system is at stake and this has been shown in the Veloso and Zainal Abidin cases. With such a condition, will the government dare to continue with executions in the future?' he said.
Maria Kristina Sergio, who allegedly recruited Veloso in 2010, surrendered to the Philippine police on Tuesday.
Sergio, along with her husband Julius Lacanilao and an African identified as Ike, recruited Veloso to bring 2.6 kilograms of heroin into Yogyakarta with the promise that she would be placed as housemaid in Malaysia. (rms)(+++)
