engue fever is on the rise in Surakarta, Central Java, possibly because of floods that took place over the past weeks, as in April hundreds of patients had been treated for the disease in hospitals and seven of them had died.
Based on data at the Surakarta Health Office, the number of affected areas was quite high. Of the 51 subdistricts in the city, 38 of them are endemic areas for dengue fever, including the Pucang Sawit, Nusukan, Semanggi, Pasar Kliwon, Kepabron, Sangkah and Kedung Lumbu subdistricts. Most of the endemic areas are located along the Bengawan Solo River.
'Most of the patients are children who were brought to hospital already in severe condition, or suffering from Dengue Shock Syndrome,' said Surakarta Health Office Disease Control and Environmental Hygiene division head Efi S. Pertiwi.
Efi added that the number of cases of dengue fever tended to rise from January. She said 288 cases had been recorded as of the 17 week in April, seven of which resulted in deaths.
'The number of cases has risen quite significantly in April. In March, only one patient died, but in April the number of fatalities stood at seven people,' said Efi.
