Transportation costs in Indonesia are three times higher than those in Singapore and Malaysia, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said on Thursday
ransportation costs in Indonesia are three times higher than those in Singapore and Malaysia, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said on Thursday.
Jokowi urged the acceleration of transportation infrastructure development in strategic areas because good transportation infrastructure would lower logistic costs and thus affect the prices of goods and services.
"Faster transportation with lower costs [would be reached, but] not in the short term," he said during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Bakauheni-Terbangi toll road in Lampung.
Jokowi said that the construction of the trans-Sumatra toll road was not a long-term project. "Once the toll road connects Sumatra, the journey from Lampung to Palembang will take three hours, from eight hours previously," he said as quoted by Antara news agency.
The President said he hoped the construction of a Sumatra railway track could be done simultaneously along with the toll road project.(+++)
