resident Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo on Friday instructed National Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti not to arrest Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigator Novel Baswedan.
'I have instructed the National Police chief to do several things. Firstly, not to arrest [Novel]. Secondly, to ensure that the legal mechanism is transparent and fair. And thirdly, to cooperate with the KPK,' Jokowi said after Friday prayers in Surakarta, Central Java, as quoted by kompas.com.
He also asked Badrodin not to do anything that would spark controversy and disrupt the harmony between the KPK and the National Police.
"The National Police, KPK and the prosecutors have to work together to eradicate corruption," he added.
Novel was arrested in the small hours of Friday as a suspect in an assault case in 2004 when he was the Bengkulu Police's detective chief. The case was reopened following the antigraft body's move to name Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan, now deputy National Police chief, a graft suspect. (fsu/nvn) (++++)
