T

he rupiah interbank trade rate depreciated by 24 basis points to Rp 13,170 per US dollar in Friday's first trading session from Rp 13,146 per dollar in the previous trade.

"The strengthening of the dollar was supported by improving data on US consumption credits, thereby causing pressure on the rupiah today," Samuel Sekuritas economist Rangga Cipta said as quoted by Antara news agency.

According to Rangga, the data has become one of the indicators on the healthy condition of the US economy. Global investors will shift their attention to the unemployment data and absorption of the workforce in the non-agriculture sector, which will be announced later this week.

"The good data will maintain the strengthening trend of the dollar," he said, adding that the absence of aggressive action by Bank Indonesia to increase the supply of the dollar in the domestic market was projected to apply pressure on the rupiah.

Bank Himpunan Saudara foreign exchange observer Rully Nova said that the possibly increase in US non-farm payrolls (NFP) was expected to raise speculation on the planned hike of interest rates by the Federal Reserve.

"Such speculation causes the higher volatility of the rupiah. The NFP data is very influential to world currencies, including the rupiah, because it can give reasons for the Fed to raise the rate," Rully added. (hhr)
