omparing President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo with six of his predecessors, Pelita Harapan University political communication expert Tjipta Lesmana says surveys are the main reason why Jokowi became president.
"Jokowi is leader because of surveys, only that," Tjipta said at a discussion of a book written by Golkar Party politician Bambang Soesatyo in Jakarta on Sunday as quoted by tempo.co.
Tjipta said the leadership characteristics of Jokowi were very different to those of his predecessors. According to him, Indonesia's first president, Sukarno, became a leader due to nationalism and his attempts to found the nation, while second president Soeharto led the country due to crisis.
"Soeharto became a leader due the crisis of the Sept. 30 Movement and other crises," Tjipta said.
Former president Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie, Tjipta said, was promoted to the role due to the Constitution. Habibie replaced Soeharto, who quit after leading the country for 32 years.
According to Tjipta, a president that had risen to the top job because of surveys was prone to intervention. In last year's election, Jokowi always lead in several surveys and his supporters generated support via social media.
According to Tjipta, one such intervention had been the public demand for Jokowi to reshuffle his cabinet. (hhr)(+++)
