t least 4,000 students gathered at the EU-Indonesia Scholarships Info Day, which featured scholarships from at least 10 EU countries and Indonesia, on Saturday. The mostly graduate and postgraduate scholarships offered attracted Indonesians in pursuit of scholarships in EU countries, which in 2013 saw at least 4,000 Indonesians studying in Europe.
Students gathered at the Grand Sahid Jaya hotel in Central Jakarta as early as 6 a.m. and quickly filled the hall, which had a capacity of 400.
Joan, 23, a second year university student, said that since last year he had been a frequent visitor to scholarship events to gather information.
'I want to study abroad. It's not to play down Indonesia's education system, but there might be more to offer there,' he said, adding he was interested to enrolling in an English graduate program at the University of Manchester in the UK. At least 7,000 Indonesians are estimated to be studying in Europe this year.
