ERIA, OECD promotes good practices, economic integration in E.Asia

T

he Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have agreed to promote good practices and economic integration in ASEAN and East Asia.

OECD deputy secretary general William Danvers said the OECD had viewed Southeast Asian engagement as a strategic priority.

'€œSince its foundation in 2008, ERIA has provided research to support the ASEAN economic integration process and structural reforms in ASEAN member countries,'€ Danvers said in a release made available to The Jakarta Post on Monday.

He highlighted his views in a half-day symposium entitled '€œInspiring the ASEAN Community Towards 2025'€, on May 4.

Danvers said with two decades of activity in the region and with the expertise in economic policy-making, the OECD was offering the collected and accumulated experience of its 34 member countries as well as many partners that participated in its work across the world.

As the OECD has a broad mandate and develops global standards, OECD instruments could be of interest to partner countries, he went on.

During the symposium, OECD secretary general Angel Gurría sounded a similar message via his video message from Paris.

'€œAsia and ASEAN countries are a growing target and of growing importance in our programs and our projects,'€ he said.

He went on to say: '€We have just launched a Southeast Asia program and precisely in support of that program is where we are going to accelerate our cooperation with ERIA.'€

For the past year, the OECD and ERIA have conducted a series of workshops on issues including small and medium enterprises, connectivity, public-private partnership, and trade in value added.

The chairman of the Parliamentary League for ERIA, Toshihiro Nikai, expressed strong appreciation for the ERIA-OECD cooperation saying that it had further strengthened the resilience of regional economies, especially amidst many natural disasters.

Nikai later proposed Nov.5 as 'World Tsunami Day' to raise awareness of the potential dangers from natural disasters, especially tsunamis. Both ERIA and OECD were supportive of the idea, he said. (ebf)(++++)
