Jokowi extends forest conversion moratorium

P

resident Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo on Wednesday extended Presidential Instruction No.6/2013 on the moratorium on the issuance of new conversion permits for primary forest and peatlands, which expired on May 13.

Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya said President Jokowi extended the forest clearance moratorium as until today, proposals suggesting ways to strengthen the implementation of the moratorium had continued to emerge.

'€œTherefore, on Wednesday morning, President Jokowi approved the extension of the moratorium,'€ Siti said after she met the President at the State Palace on Wednesday, according to a press release.

The minister said the discussion on efforts to strengthen the moratorium would be carried out during the extension period, and could be conducted across ministries together with relevant elements.

'€œMoratorium-reinforcement suggestions submitted by the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi), Partnership, Sawit Watch, World Resources Institute (WRI) and many more will be appreciated and summarized by the Environment and Forestry Ministry for a follow-up,'€ said Siti.

Former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono signed the two-year moratorium stopping the handing-out of licenses to convert primary forest and peatland for business purposes in February 2011. He extended it in 2013. (ebf) (++++)
